A Tool for Psychologists: N2 Behavioral Activation

Behavioral Activation (BA) is one of the most studied and effective clinical competencies in psychology. It focuses on breaking the cycle of inactivity, isolation, and emotional distress, helping people regain motivation and well-being.

What is Behavioral Activation?
BA aims for the person to resume meaningful and enjoyable activities, even when initial energy or mood is low.
👉 By acting first, small experiences of achievement and enjoyment are generated, which reactivate motivation and improve mood.

It is based on a simple principle:
Action precedes motivation.
Waiting to “feel like it” to do something often perpetuates distress; instead, taking small steps facilitates positive change.

Practical exercise: Activity and mood log

  • Write down what you did during the day (even if minimal).
  • Next to it, put a number from 1 to 10 according to your mood after doing it.
  • Repeat this for 3 consecutive days to observe patterns.

This log makes it possible to detect which activities lift mood, beyond prior motivation. In this way, a personal map of behaviors that promote well-being is built.

Clinical application
BA is highly effective in the treatment of depression and other disorders related to apathy and avoidance.
In addition, it is a transdiagnostic tool, as it improves quality of life across different mental health conditions.
